Amtrak is asking Congress for funds as a part of the president s infrastructure bill to extend passenger rail service up the coast to Rockland, but cities in central Maine, including the state capital, would be left out.
Amtrak has proposed extending its Downeaster passenger rail service to Rockland, which is located north on the coast from Brunswick and Portland. The train currently carries riders from Brunswick to Boston.
Amtrak officials are hoping Congress will provide the $80 billion designated for rail in Biden’s American Jobs Plan, they said in an announcement on March 31.
The Democratic-held Congress returns to Washington this week from recess with infrastructure at the top of its agenda. Lawmakers will likely take months to craft and pass massive legislation that would affect everything from roads, bridges, airports and trains to broadband, housing, utilities and job training.
It would also hike the corporate tax rate and seek to deter offshoring of corporate profits. The proposed tax hikes have irked Republicans.
In a statement following the meeting, the White House said Biden and lawmakers had a good exchange of ideas, and the President asked for their feedback and follow-up on proposals discussed in the meeting, while underscoring that inaction is not an option.
India has broken fresh records in terms of Covid-19 cases and has become the second highest country with coronavirus infected patients.
NEW DELHI: The Congress on Monday alleged that the BJP-led central government s strategy to control the spread of Covid-19 was a monumental failure and said while people are dying across the country the saffron party s leadership is busy campaigning for elections.
Congress spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said people of the country will not pardon the BJP for such a dangerous situation and called for scaling up the Covid-19 vaccination drive. The country wants to know, what did the Prime Minister do for the past 385 days, apart from politics? Patients are suffering, patients are dying, what is the Prime Minister planning for the weaker sections of this country? Is there any kind of a safety net, he is going to provide, Kumar asked.
